Find your perfect fit

The complete rug size guide

The right rug does more than fill a floor. It defines the room, connects the furniture, and makes the whole space feel considered.

Before you measure

Three rules that make choosing easier

A rug should feel generous, balanced, and connected to the furniture around it.

01

Go larger, not smaller

A generous rug visually enlarges the room. A rug that is too small can make even beautiful furniture feel disconnected.

02

Connect the furniture

The rug should sit beneath or touch the main furniture pieces, creating one composed arrangement instead of separate islands.

03

Show some floor

Leave a visible border of floor around the rug. In most rooms, 8-17 in creates a refined, intentional frame.

Measure with confidence

A simple way to plan the rug

A few minutes with painter's tape can prevent a rug that feels too small or overwhelms the room.

  • Mark the outlineUse painter's tape to mark the proposed rug size directly on the floor.
  • Open the doorsCheck that doors, cabinets, and vents can open freely above the rug and any rug pad.
  • Measure twiceRecord the maximum width and length, then check the furniture layout before ordering.
  • Photograph the spaceA quick photo with the taped outline makes it easier to compare proportions or ask us for advice.

Rug sizing questions

Can you make a rug in a custom size?

Yes. Most of our rugs are woven to order, so we can create the exact dimensions your room needs.

Should the rug go under the sofa?

For most living rooms, at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. In larger rooms, placing all furniture legs on the rug creates the most unified result.

How much floor should show around the rug?

A border of approximately 8 - 17 in works in most rooms. Smaller rooms may need less, while large rooms can carry a wider border.

Do handmade rug sizes vary?

Slight variation is normal because every rug is measured, knotted, trimmed, and washed by hand. This subtle irregularity is part of its handmade character.
